Secrets of the Mind by EJ Bennett

I've been catching up with some reviews, and this is another great indie published book.
This story relates a teenage Kayla’s realisation that the world she lives in is not the world she was born to be in. Her mom died when she was a child so she lives with foster parents, but she experiences nightmares and poor sleep, and cannot understand why. Then her grandmother turns up claiming custody and removes her to a place she’s never been before, Enchanted Falls, a place inhabited by supernatural beings.
Kayla finds out she is a witch, and for some reason dark forces are after her, and these follow her to her new home where she is kidnapped, but manages to escape her captors. Kayla is understandably confused, angry, and resentful of all the lies. Added to that she has to try and learn how to control her powers.
The story is told is told vividly with lots of description from the first person point of view, and moves between Kayla, Chris one of her guardians, and Belinda, her grandmother. I must admit I'm not a fan of the first person POV, I find it can be overwhelming, but EJ Bennett does a good job of relating the intense thoughts of a teen girl. This is the first in a series, so there’s lots more story to come, and the book ends on a cliff hanger. I’m looking forward to reading the second book.
